Mastering the Board

1

Entering Tokens

All your tokens start at the Home (off-board). To bring a token onto your starting safe square (marked with ✕), you must roll a **Thayam (1)**.

2

Extra Turn Rolls

Rolling values of **1 (Thayam)**, **5 (Aindhu)**, **6 (Aaru)**, or **12 (Pannirendu)** gives you an immediate extra roll. You can stack rolls and distribute them among different tokens!

3

Cutting & Capturing

Land on a cell occupied by an opponent to **cut** their token, sending it back to start. However, you cannot capture tokens sitting on the marked **Safe Squares**.

Heritage & History

Carved In Stone: The Sangam Legacy

Thayam is one of the oldest board games of Tamil Nadu, with roots tracing back over 2,000 years to the **Sangam Period** (c. 3rd century BCE to 3rd century CE). References to similar dice and board setups occur in ancient Tamil literature, showing its deep-seated role in South Indian culture.

Temple Floor Carvings

Walk through ancient temples in Tamil Nadu, and you will find Thayam grid boards carved directly into stone steps. Craftsmen, kings, and priests played these board games during peaceful afternoons.

Mythological Ties

Dice games in India carry rich mythological meaning, frequently representing the forces of luck, karma, and destiny. Thayam captures this balance between the roll of the dice and strategic human choice.

Tamil Cultural Identity

Traditionally played during festivals like Pongal, family gatherings, and lazy afternoons, Thayam stands as a timeless classic connecting generations. Thayabox keeps this heritage alive in modern times.
